Bathing Suit Shopping Tips for Every Body Type

Updated: Apr 7

Summer is three months filled with blissful weather, beautiful vacations, and, for many, the dreaded thought of putting on a bathing suit. Bathing suits are tough for anyone in any body. Showing skin and feeling confident can be challenging but there are some tips and tricks to make it easier. Here are the three areas I get asked about most when it comes to feeling confident picking out and wearing a bathing suit.

Support The Girls

First things first, you have to have good support up top. Wearing supportive bathing suit tops helps degine your waist and can make you look significantly thinner (the same goes for bras). When searching for the right suit, make sure it has the appropriate type of padding and straps. If you are heavier in the chest a skinny strap is not going to do the job. Opt for a top with a bra built in. Shop my pick for a supportive bikini top here.

Flatter Your Stomach

Nearly every woman has an issue with the way her stomach looks and accentuating the area with a two piece suit doesn't always help. That being said, it doesn’t mean you have to wear an “old lady one piece”. One pieces have come a long way. A perfect way to hide the tummy but still look chic and not overly covered up is to pick a suit that has ruching in the stomach area. This takes attention away from the stomach and puts the focus elsewhere. Cutouts are another alternative where you can show off an hourglass figure even if you feel comfortable bearing all. Shop my pick for a ruched suit and cutout suit.

Minimizing Hips

Your hips don’t lie and that can be problematic when you are under harsh dressing room lighting feeling like your bathing suit shopping trip is doomed. If this is an area you struggle with, high waisted bottoms like this are your friend. Not only does a high waist accentuate killer curves, it also covers up trouble areas while still showing off some skin. A good rule of thumb for high waisted bottoms is to make sure they sit above the belly button to prevent any muffin top mishaps. If high waisted isn't your thing, you can always opt for a great cover up to lounge in. Try repurposing an old silk scarf to tie around your waist or be on trend this season with a kimono. Lastly, have fun with it. You only have one body and comparing it to others will not make you love yours any more. Try on as many bathing suits as it takes for you to feel confident and enjoy the summer as much as you can because come winter you will be wishing for it back.
